Turmeric milk – Spice Trail III

A warm soothing cup of Turmeric Milk not only helps you to sleep well, but also gives your stomach a nice warm hug. It’s going to be a long post, so I recommend you jump right into the recipe, prepare a cup of turmeric milk and read this post.  turmeric milk

I am going through a very tough time. I really can’t share that information here until it happens but I am praying hard for it to end soon – so I can share the “good news” with you guys. It’s related to my professional life and career, which is why I have reduced my Facebook attachment to a bare minimum and deleted Facebook chat.

Fellow food bloggers, I know I am not able to comment on your blog posts, but I am checking your posts whenever I am getting time.

I was also suffering from mild fever and cold while doing this post. In addition to that, I have 2 Harvard projects and 1 assignment due next week(when I will be at Spain). So you get it that I am busy. I am sure, some of you sure saying “She is making up these excuses.” Well you don’t have to, just live my life for a day!

Since last week I have partnered with Ogusky Ceramics. I will show Jeremy’s brilliant pottery work through my photography. NO THIS IS NOT A SPONSORED POST. I decided to promote his work, because he is an artist and artists like him need promotion. So share his work with your friends and help him to make more beautiful art pieces.

I have also decided not to work with any commercial brand (like OXO, Nutribullet) unless I respect their organization, work or items they produce. They don’t need promotion and my husband says “Don’t get any more stuffs, we don’t have room”. Well I agree with him – there is no point for me to get a mandolin slicer for free if I am just using it once for sake of a blog post. That being said, if I love something and I believe it can help you, I won’t hesitate to share.

Last but not the least, we are leaving for Spain very soon. We both are going through a lot of mental stress due to our work. So we genuinely hope to relax a bit before those thoughts start bugging us again.

As all of you know I have teamed up with Simi, Deeba from January to promote Indian Spices and capture their beauties through our lenses. Meeta joined us from February and so far we are loving every bit of spice photography. This month we are shooting Cardamom, Peppers and Turmeric.

Since my childhood I have seen fresh turmeric in groceries but Dad never bought them because my mom does not like the taste of fresh turmeric. However my grandma drinks a glass of turmeric milk every single day up until now. I have seen fresh turmeric at Whole Foods and I wanted to try it for a while. When we “spice girls” decided to shoot turmeric this month, I decided to try this turmeric milk.

I am happy that I did try this. It’s not only helping me to soothe my stomach, it’s helping me to sleep better. I have used non-dairy milk for this turmeric milk as I am semi lactose intolerant – but you can use the whole milk for this recipe.

I am sure you can find the benefits of Turmeric milk from Google. So far it helped me in digestion, soothing my inflamed stomach, curing coughs and colds, menstrual cramps and sleeplessness. Granny and ma often say “It’s going to purify your blood”. I have been consuming it for a while and I am planning to do it a bit longer.

Recipe for Turmeric Milk

Serves 2 cups
3 piece (6-inches) turmeric root, peeled and finely chopped
1 piece (2-inch) ginger, peeled and finely chopped

5 black cloves
10 black pepper corns
1 piece (1 inch) cinnamon stick
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 cups non-dairy milk (I use almond-chia-coconut blend)
1 teaspoon honey

  1. In a mortar-pestle or food processor, add turmeric root, ginger root, green and black cardamom pods, black cloves, pepper corns, cinnamon stick, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg. Work it until it forms a rough paste.
  2. In a sauce pan, over medium heat, heat milk. Add the rough turmeric paste to milk. Bring it to boil. Reduce the temperature to medium and boil it for 5 minutes. Strain it and serve with honey.

  4. Every time I see your blog posts, I cannot help but feel awed by the insane amount of hard work and dedication you put into it. I know how difficult it is to maintain a blog for a full-time professional and kudos to you for channelising your energy so constructively and dishing out such mouth-watering recipes and photographs for us to savour. Whatever it is that is bogging you down, I hope, shall pass soon and the Spanish vacation will do wonders to your body and mind and completely refresh and rejuvinate you. 🙂 Bon voyage!

  5. Hi…. Lovely pics… Actually I have a query. Is it possible to make it in bulk for a week n store in fridge n later add the infused water with the milk? Thanks ????.

  6. Can This be made like a syrup and stored ? Will make it easier for busy days.

  7. I will definitely make it and see how it works to me. I guess it is anti inflammatory too… A friendly advice for you manstrual cramps is to follow a sugar-free diet and gluten free diet as much as you can.. It really helps a lot to cut out sugar consumption.

    Lavanya,
I never have done it and I can’t vouch for that. It only takes 10-15 minutes to make. Throw everything together, boil and strain – taste is going to be much better.

  9. Another post that really touches the heart. Surely will try. I have been itching to buy some fresh turmeric, this is certainly a good one to start on. you could also add a little bit of jaggery instead of the honey, that’s how we make kashayam a desi remedy for cold.

  10. Gorgeous post Dol. Loved the props you have used. And I totally understand and respect your decision.
