Cambridge Walk IV (Fall Color) and leaving Facebook

I am leaving Facebook.

My friends asked ‘What do you mean?’ Some wondered ‘Why?’

I will start with the ‘why’.

Why?

I am 31 years old so I have more life ahead of me. I need to do something meaningful with my life rather than researching on other people’s life. So I have decided to stop using Facebook for personal use. I will be there to share Story of Cooks’ content with my readers, family and friends.

What will I do with the free time?

I will read books, news paper. I will bring a book with me and sit next to the Charles river and read. I will speak with my husband, who truly cares for me. I will call the friends who will come if I am sick not the virtual friends who can only write ‘Get well soon’. I will email old colleagues and ask what’s happening in their life.

More importantly, I will do photography. I will contribute more towards Stock Photography.

Will I stop blogging?

Absolutely not! I love blogging so I will be doing that. I am working on a few innovative recipes with mom which will be published soon.

What prompted me to take this decision?

I read some articles

  1. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff deleted his Facebook account because it was getting ‘overwhelming’
  2. Why I Deleted my Social Media Accounts

And many more on internet.

But more importantly, I see three men in my life – my husband, my dad and father-in-law do not use Facebook and they live happily. They have only two goals – work and family. I want to be more like them.

My husband Matthew does not care where his school friends went for vacation. He does not want to know where his old neighbor celebrated their anniversary. He lives happily. He works and spends rest of the time with me.

I want to do the same. I want to give my 100% to him. When he is with me, I want to be with him, not with my virtual friends.

Some of my friends wondered, how can they reach me?

  1. Instagram Message
  2. Whatsapp Message (You can email me to get the number).
  3. Email : storyofcooks@gmail.com or don456@g.harvard.edu

So if you want to reach me, you can reach me right?!

A few days back I remember reading somewhere, over-connectivity. Yes! The problem is we live in a world of over-connectivity. We have email. Then we have phone messages. After that we have social media to reach. Do you really need to be over connected?

We are not saving life. So why do we need to be over connected. If someone says, ‘I want to know which lens to buy?’ that person can wait a day or two for my response. (S)he won’t die without the lens.

Anyway, the point is over-connectivity kills our life. We are more with our virtual friends over text and social media message than our real friends who live right next to the home. We know what’s happening with people half way across the globe but not sure if a neighbor passed away. I know more about bloggers in India than my 90+ years neighbor with dementia.

So! Cheers to my new Facebook free life.
